Brush Truck

BRUSH UNIT STANDARDS

A. All Brush Units to be numbered with 1-digit per your station number unless more than 1 Brush Unit, then use a 2-digit number for each additional unit.

Example: Brush 2-1, Brush 3, Brush 4-1, Brush 5, Brush 6-1, Brush 7.

B. The vehicle shall consist of a motorized 4-wheel drive piece of apparatus of minimum

capacity to carry the equipment listed below without being overloaded. The vehicle shall meet DOT specifications & shall not exceed the chassis manufacturer's G.V.W. It must be registered as an emergency vehicle & meet all codes of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administrations or its successors.

C. It shall be equipped as follows:

  • Fire Pump

  1. Pump capacity of 100 GPM or more.

  1. Pump shall be tested annually in accordance with current NFPA 1911. Test results shall be given to the Standards Committee.

  • Water Tank

  1. Water tank capacity of 125 gallons or more.

  • Suction Hose, Supply Hose, Fire Hose, Nozzles and Adapters

  1. If the fire pump is equipped to draft apparatus shall carry two (2) 10-ft. sections of 2 ½-in or larger hard suction.

  1. One (1) suction strainer mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus if not connected to the suction hose.

  1. 25-ft. of 3-in. supply hose.

  1. 100-ft. of 1 ½-in. or 1 ¾-in or 2-in. fire hose.

  1. One booster reel with at least 150-ft. of 1-in. booster hose.

  1. Fire hose shall be tested annually in accordance with current NFPA 1962. Test results shall be given to the Standards Committee.

  1. One (1) 1 ½-in. 95 GPM minimum hand line nozzle.

  1. One (1) 1-in. booster hose nozzle.

  1. One (1) adjustable hydrant wrench mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

  1. Two (2) combination spanner wrenches mounted in brackets fastened to the apparatus.

  1. Two (2) booster hose spanner wrenches.

  1. One (1) 2 ½-in. NST double female mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

  1. One (1) 2 ½-in NST double male mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

  1. One (1) 2 ½-in. NST female x 1 ½-in. NST male reducer mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

· Miscellaneous Equipment

1. One (1) 6-lb. flat head axe mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

2. Four (4) brush rakes.

3. One (1) round point shovel mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

4. Two (2) Indian tanks mounted in brackets fastened to the apparatus.

5. One (1) approved dry chemical portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 40-B:C rating mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus.

6. One (1) 6-ft. minimum tow chain.

7. Two (2) portable hand lights mounted in brackets fastened to the apparatus.

· EMS

1. One (1) first aid kit.

· Safety Equipment

1. Two (2) solid bottom wheel chocks, mounted in readily accessible locations, each designed to hold the apparatus, when loaded to its GVWR, on a 10 percent grade with the transmission in neutral and the parking brake released.

2. One (1) traffic vest for each riding position. Each vest to comply with ANSI/ISEA 207, Standard for High-Visibility Public Vests, and have five-point breakaway feature that includes two at the shoulders, two at the sides, and one at the front.

3. Five (5) fluorescent orange traffic cones not less than 28-in. in height, each equipped with 6-in. retro-reflective white band no more than 4-in. from the top of the cone, additional 4-in. retro-reflective white band 2-in. below the 6-in. band.

4. Eight (8) 30-minute safety flares.

5. One (1) set, at least three (3), of emergency road triangles.

6. One (1) roll of fire-line tape.

7. Apparatus shall have warning signals in accordance with NFPA 1906 when the apparatus was ordered.

8. Apparatus shall have an audible back-up alarm.

9. Apparatus shall meet Federal DOT standards for lighting, axle loads, tire sizes, frame capacities, height, length, width, etc.

10. All Equipment shall be mounted, maintained and in good working order.

· Radios and Reference Material

1. One (1) two-way radio to meet county standards.

2. Two (2) portable radios to meet county standards.

3. One (1) current Kent County Map Book.

4. One (1) Map Book for all surrounding counties in which the company responds to an alarm.

5. One (1) Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG).

· Suggested Optional Equipment

1. 200-ft. of 1-in forestry hose.

2. One (1) additional 1-in booster hose nozzle.

3. One (1) 1 ½-in NST female x 1-in male reducer mounted in bracket fastened to the apparatus.

4. One (1) pair of bolt cutters.

5. One (1) pitch fork.

6. One (1) 6,000-lb. minimum vehicle mounted winch with a minimum of 100-ft. of cable.

7. One (1) pulley of winch cable size.

8. One (1) chain saw.

9. Five (5) gallons of class “A” foam.

10. One (1) foam educator shall be carried if the fire pump does not have a built in foam proportion system.

11. One (1) foam nozzle or foam tube.

12. One (1) self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) complying with NFPA 1981, Standard on Open-Circuit Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus for Emergency Services, for each assigned seating position, but not fewer than two, mounted in brackets fastened to the apparatus or stored in containers supplied by the SCBA manufacturer.

13. One (1) spare SCBA cylinder for each SCBA carried, each mounted in a bracket fastened to the apparatus or stored in a specially designed storage space.
